Mercers’ Maiden

This roundel is a proposal for a new property mark for the Worshipful Company of Mercers’ in the City of London. The maiden in relief harks back to the roundels of the Renaissance artist Lucca Della Robbia. She is demure with her eyes downcast. The downcast gaze is appropriate as she will be looking at the observer from high up on a building. Her dishevelled locks fall about the flesh of her sensuous shoulders, and her modesty is maintained by a silk twist around the breasts. Maybe there are echoes of the modern Maiden in our attractive young addition to the Royal family, Katherine Duchess of Cambridge. The structure for this version is identical to Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Dean John Colet which can be viewed in St Paul’s Cathedral.
